After Newtown, NRA Ready to Make 'Meaningful Contributions'

Fairfax-headquartered group issues statement about preventing future tragedies after shooting that killed 28, including the gunman, in Connecticut.

After days of silence, the National Rifle Association, headquartered in Fairfax, has released a statement on the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., saying it will make "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

In the release, the organization begins to explain its silence, saying: "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting."

Critics had called out the group in the days following the shooting: As citizens and legislators began to fall on either side of a debate about what, if at all, should be done about gun laws, many wondered why the group was absent from the conversation.

The organization released its statement Tuesday to the press

The organization announced it will hold a press conference Friday in Washington, D.C.

More details on Friday's press conference will be released when timing is deemed "appropriate," according to the statement.

The statement comes after President Barack Obama said he wanted to tighten gun laws in light of Friday's shootings.

On the Hartland Patch Facebook page, readers have debated the issue of gun control laws, including Gov. Snyder's decision to veto the bill that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones.

Dennis Weber wrote that shooting sprees are taking place in schools and universities over 50 percent of the time.

"Why?" he wrote on the Facebook page. "Because these are easy targets. They are "Gun Free Zones." By allow(ing) law abiding gun owners to carry there, might just save some lives in the future. These gunman stop as soon as they are confronted by armed adversaries be it Law enforcement or Armed civilians. These shootings usually only last about 10 minutes on average and by the time cops arrive most the damage is done."

Other Hartland residents, however, like Mike Trussell disagreed.

"Just what we don't need is more guns in the schools," he wrote. "How about armed police officers instead."

Usually they say that "this is not the time to discuss politics and that there will be ample time to do so in the future", so maybe we are seeing some progress? I – for one – am not holding my breath.

How many of the deceased parents own weapons. My heart goes out to them but I think this a valid question that should be looked into

Addressing contributors should be reviewed. Was this person involved in the aggressive video games out today. These games do have influence on a mind that has issues. Guns like devices are used to destroy .

Gary,
I couldn't agree more with you. When games award a young person to sexually assualt and kill people, there is no doubt that it would build an indifference to the game player. I would be very intested to find out what types of games the offender in this case was playing....

Fred- naive and ignorant. Labeling with inflammatory titles is pointless. If only you would see what the Taliban is capable of doing first hand like many of us American Servicemen have you would have a different point of view. Call an organization with an agenda you don't believe in something else.

See here's the thing.connecticut has some of the strictest gun laws in the US.So how much stricter must they become?here in arizona we have quite lax gun laws ans yes we did havethe tucson shooting but our schools and children aren't getting shot at school.not too many people want to test to see who has a gun on them or not so it is relitively quiet out here on the gun violence...take away guns from the rightful people and the criminals win.they will be the armed factor and not have to worry about getting shot at while commiting crimes...

What if the teachers had weapons and were highly trained like police officers? @gary. Are you serious about video games being the blame? Its a parents responsibility ti teach between a game and real life.

I wonder if the real issue of mental illness and the public not being able to point out some one who could be dangerous will come to the table. Granted, everyone has rights, but no one has the right to harm others. Currently you have to do something violent, before any mental health agency will look at you. Shame on the country that says any one who has a mental illness cannot be singled out, just because someone else thinks they may be dangerous. If the experiences of friends, co-workers, teachers, and family members were listened to,....there would not have been a Colombine, a Virginia Tech or a Newton. Lets do whats right. Let those that could harm the innocents be brought in for treatment, and prosecute the firearms owners who do NOT keep their arms locked up where others cannot take them. Who cares how many rounds a rifle or pistol can hold. It's just a matter of re-loading. Who cares what name or lable you put on a semi-auto rifle. A strictly sporting version with a pretty walnut stock works exactly the same as a "black" "AR" type. No difference at all. Of course, you would have to actually research the different types, not just run with the catch phrase that the reporters wave about. We all know how accurate they are.,

I think extreme taxes and fees should be placed on high powered weapons purchases and that money should go to education funding.obviously these weapons only lead destruction for crying out loud we are civilians who this time happen to be children

I'm not sure banning assault weapons will be the solution. The cat's already out of the bag, and they are prevalent in our society. I would however suggest that no one under 30 years of age be allowed to own a weapon, with the exceptions of Law Enforcement and Veterans.

Lax
You are correct and I apologize.
This morning i heard a news story about how the Taliban stifil any desent in their regions as they proclaim a fundamentalism that is factually incorrect and brings harm to their constituents and death to innocents. The NRA's modus operandi while not being directly violent is, in my opinion, similar to the Taliban's.
