Staff Serves Up Big Boy Scarecrow
Hartland Heritage Day people's choice contest involves area businesses and groups.

From buying the clothes from the area Salvation Army and an Elvis wig from a Halloween store to sewing on red patches and using curling irons and hairspray — it was a team effort in building the scarecrow at the Hartland Big Boy, said owner Jean Shaieb.
"It was a group effort," said Shaieb, who singled out hostess Kathy Melton for her sewing skills. "My employees are a lot of fun. … We were in with curling irons and flat irons. Imagine trying to turn Elvis into Big Boy.
Shaieb said in the future, she'd be willing to host many scarecrows and line them up outside along M-59, similar to a contest at an Ann Arbor Big Boy.
"I think it's fun," she said of the contest. "I like anything creative."
How to vote
If you'd like to vote for Big Boy's entry in the heritage day scarecrow contest, you can vote at Cromaine District Library, the Hartland Area Chamber of Commerce or email info@hartlandchamber.org or cmarlow@comaine.org. Votes must be received by Friday, Sept. 16. Winners will be announced around noon at the chamber Saturday, Sept. 17, on heritage day. Vote categories are: most interesting, most historic or most colorful.
