Every Age Needs Their Own Special Place
Time has shown me that no matter what age you are, everyone needs a safe place to go to be great.
It's amazing what a blanket over a couple chairs can do to create a world of possibilites.
The other day my boys were in a basement playing with friends under a homemade tent and I was reminded of how blessed and easy childhood can be at times. Those special years when the ability to create a magical space only requires stealing from your mom's linen closet.
Just like that, a magical world of soldiers, monsters, secret agents and missions to save the world come to life under the cover of Christmas blankets and old sheets.
It's a world where anything is possible and you can go wherever you want and be whatever – brave, strong, smart, fearless and most importantly, safe.
Hidden under those layers of cloth lies a private world, a secret space for just you and your friends. A safe place to tell your secrets, explore your dreams and share your fears. It's safe because just the simple act of blocking out the rest of the world from view makes it so.
I realized, as I listened to the group of boys laugh and play in their imaginary place, that having a safe spot hidden from the rest of the world is helpful and fun at every age.
People of all ages should find their safe place in this world, whether it's soaking in your bathtub behind a locked door or a private page on Facebook for just you and your friends. Finding that spot where your secrets are safe, your dreams are respected and your fears can be conquered is important throughout our lives.
So, I am encouraging everyone – go find your childhood tent. Create a space that is sacred and safe so that when you need those five minutes to hide from the world, you always know right where to go.
