It has been 24 hours since Aimee Lawrence last saw or had any contact with her 17-year-old daughter, Brittany Dickson.

The family has tried to file a missing person report with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, but was told they must wait until Friday before they can do so because of Brittany's age and if there is a question of her safety.

According to Deputy Sokol of the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, because Brittany is 17, she is considered to be a legal adult.

"If she's 17, you can't file her as missing unless you have some reason to believe that she's in danger," Sokol said.

The family recently received a text from a "boyfriend" telling the family he knew where she was. Although Lawrence says she she does not know the boyfriend and has never met him before, the family was told they must wait three days before her daughter can officially be listed as a missing person.

Lawrence says she will attempt to file another report on Friday if she has not heard from Brittany by then.

Brittany left her home in Hartland around 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon after a fight with her mother. The teenager walked out of the house with no shoes and left behind her cell phone.

“Yesterday when she left, I couldn’t believe it,” Lawrence said. “We got into a fight and all last night all I kept thinking was that last time I saw her, we were yelling and screaming at each other.”

Lawrence, who has been following her daughter’s Facebook page hoping for any new posts that may lead her to her daughter, believes Brittany may be at a girlfriend’s house, possibly in Rockford, but is unable to get confirmation and has had no communication with her daughter in over 24 hours.

“I want to hear from her,” Lawrence said. “My message, that is the most important to me, is I want to hear her voice, to know that she is OK and Sophia, her 7-year-old sister, is going to want to talk to her." 

Lawrence contacted the police on Monday night after her daughter left and was told she had to wait 24 hours before she could file a report. Now, Lawrence and her family are left "waiting for the phone to ring" hoping Brittany will call or to find out any information about their daughter.

“I am surprised that she has not contacted me or anything,” Lawrence said. “All I want is a call, a one-minute phone call."
