Hartland Teenager Still Missing, Family Must Wait to File Missing Person Report

Brittany Dickson has been missing for over 24 hours.

It has been 24 hours since Aimee Lawrence last saw or had any contact with her 17-year-old daughter, Brittany Dickson.

The family has tried to file a missing person report with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department, but was told they must wait until Friday before they can do so because of Brittany's age and if there is a question of her safety.

According to Deputy Sokol of the Livingston County Sheriff's Department, because Brittany is 17, she is considered to be a legal adult.

"If she's 17, you can't file her as missing unless you have some reason to believe that she's in danger," Sokol said.

The family recently received a text from a "boyfriend" telling the family he knew where she was. Although Lawrence says she she does not know the boyfriend and has never met him before, the family was told they must wait three days before her daughter can officially be listed as a missing person.

Lawrence says she will attempt to file another report on Friday if she has not heard from Brittany by then.

Brittany left her home in Hartland around 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon after a fight with her mother. The teenager walked out of the house with no shoes and left behind her cell phone.

“Yesterday when she left, I couldn’t believe it,” Lawrence said. “We got into a fight and all last night all I kept thinking was that last time I saw her, we were yelling and screaming at each other.”

Lawrence, who has been following her daughter’s Facebook page hoping for any new posts that may lead her to her daughter, believes Brittany may be at a girlfriend’s house, possibly in Rockford, but is unable to get confirmation and has had no communication with her daughter in over 24 hours.

“I want to hear from her,” Lawrence said. “My message, that is the most important to me, is I want to hear her voice, to know that she is OK and Sophia, her 7-year-old sister, is going to want to talk to her."

Lawrence contacted the police on Monday night after her daughter left and was told she had to wait 24 hours before she could file a report. Now, Lawrence and her family are left "waiting for the phone to ring" hoping Brittany will call or to find out any information about their daughter.

“I am surprised that she has not contacted me or anything,” Lawrence said. “All I want is a call, a one-minute phone call."

If you have any information regarding Brittany’s whereabouts, contact the family at 313-590-1892.

Well a strange man is texting the mother saying he knows where she is. As a parent I would have to think that is reason enough to believe that she's in danger. I presume mom gave the police the young mans phone number. Why not talk to him before a tragedy occurs?

I would be looking this phone number up! How dumb are people. If this were my kid I would be doing anything and everything, including getting on one of the news channels

The parents can report her missing after 24 hours and should insist on it. She is considered their responsibility until age 18. Even adults can be reported missing after 24 hours. She has no money, shoes, phone and no place to go. She should be reported ASAP and if the Sheriff won't do so call the Michigan State Police.

It would seem that some training/awareness is needed amongst the Livingston County sheriff ranks, as it is actually completely false that a seventeen year old is considered an adult under Michigan law. See e.g. http://www.michigan.gov/fyit/0,4585,7-240-44299-160950--,00.html

I don't care what age my daughter is, I would be a wreck if the police didn't search for her. You can tell by this mother's reaction that it is not normal for her daughter to just leave and not call and let her mom know that she is okay.

Sadly this is all too familiar. Two years ago my cousins daughter left their home with no shoes, phone, etc., and my cousin had no clue where she went. When she tried to file a missing persons report with the Westland police dept. she was told that kids do that. They take off when they're mad. They did not take her worries seriously. The outcome for her was not good. Carlee had been murdered by 2 boys that knew her! Her body has never been recovered. I'm only posting this much info because I'm appalled that these policies are in place. Early reporting/investigating could mean the difference between life and death. You can bet if it was one of their daughters they wouldn't wait 24 hours.
Someone needs to advocate for this worried mom. I hope and pray that before anyone reads this that her girl has been found safe and sound.

Too bad she didn't take the family car. The police don't make you wait 24 hours to report those missing.
