After changing his attitude, Hartland High School senior Sean Pengelly says he “decided” to be better after being one of the slowest runners in middle school. 

“I just kept working at it,” Pengelly said. “I was sick of being slow and I just worked at it more.”

On Wednesday, Pengelly proved what hard work and a positive attitude could accomplish as he officially signed his letter of intent to run cross county for Michigan Tech.

“I didn’t really think about running in college until the beginning of my junior year,” he said. “I really like the team aspect of it.”

Hartland’s cross country coach, Matt Gutteridge says Pengelly’s chosen school will be a “right fit” for the young runner.

“I am very proud of Sean and excited for him,” Gutteridge said. “He has worked very hard for the opportunity to run at the next level.” 

Gutteridge also says Michigan Tech will offer Pengelly an opportunity to pursue his other dream of becoming part of their Railroad Engineering program while still allowing him the opportunity to continue to compete on a higher level as a runner. 

“I wish Sean the best of luck,” Gutteridge said.
