Hartland Wrestling Hammers Waterford Mott, Walled Lake Western

Eagles almost perfect in KLAA crossover.

The Hartland High School wrestling team dominated Waterford Mott and Walled Lake Western — falling a pin short of a perfect score against the Corsairs and and losing only three matches vs. the Warriors — during Wednesday's Kensington Lakes Athletic Association quad.

"We came in knowing the match-ups were pretty good for us," Hartland head coach Todd Cheney said. "We wrestled pretty well, but we still have some things to work on. It's weird with duals like this when you get on the lopsided end of a score and you still end up losing a match that you know you shouldn't lose."

The Eagles, who won 82-0 against Mott and 61-12 vs. Walled Lake, improved to 12-1 on the season.

Senior Nick Long (215) lost to Walled Lake Western's Brent Zdebski 4-3 in one of the last few matches of the dual, making the dual score 49-6 after sophomore Devon Chalut lost to Gabe Costauzo 7-1 in the 135 pound match.

"We lost a tough one there at 215, but we'll get better. That's just how it is," Cheney said.

Sophomore Mitchel Thomas won both matches, pinning Waterford Mott's Alex Moore in 1:18 and Walled Lake Western's Troy Thomas in 0:43.

"I think we did well," Thomas said. "Everyone wrestled well. We had a couple of tough matches, but we won the ones we were expected to win."

Along with Thomas, freshman Austin Eicher (112), freshman Justin Rollins (125), senior Chase Snider (145), junior Justin Charneski (171) and junior Matt Ostermiller (189) all pinned in both duals.

According to Thomas, getting out from the bottom is one thing the team needs to work on throughout the rest of the season.

"We have to move our feet more because most of the kids just sit on bottom," Thomas said. "Kids also need to win matches that are close, and not lose by a couple of points."

The Eagles head to Wyandotte Roosevelt for an individual tournament 10 a.m. Saturday.

Great job, Megan. It is so refreshing to find a reporter who a) understands wrestling and b) can write AND take photos. Keep it up!
