Hartland High School's wrestling team continues to impress with its young team capturing second at the Holland Team Tournament on Saturday, beating two ranked teams before losing in the final to St. Johns.
The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in Division 1, beat Hudsonville in first round 44-23; Division 2 No. 10-ranked Sparta in the second round 39-31; Zeeland East in the third round 78-3; and Division 1 No. 6-ranked Temperance Bedford in the semifinals 36-33. They lost to Division 2 top-ranked St. Johns in the finals 55-12. The tournament included 16 total teams, of which seven are ranked.
"St. Johns is incredible — one of the best high school teams I have ever seen," said Hartland head coach Todd Cheney. "They are currently ranked No. 7 in the nation."
Freshman Austin Eicher (112) was the only wrestler to go 5-0, but a lot of Eagles shined throughout the tournament. They included:
- Sophomore Chad Maks (160) saw his first varsity match and didn't let anyone down — he came from behind against Hudsonville, helping the team earn the win.
- In a close dual against Sparta, senior Nick Long (215) got the pin in the last match to ensure a win for the Eagles.
- With Hartland up 24-21 against Temperance Bedford, Long and junior Matt Ostermiller (189) both earned first period pins, guaranteeing a team victory.
The Eagles (8-1) have the holiday season off before returning to its home mats 5:30 p.m. Jan. 6 against Waterford Mott and Walled Lake Western.
"I was overly impressed with the effort of our boys today," Cheney said. "We wrestled as a team and each guy understood his job. That helped us win three close duals. Our boys continue to impress me each week."
