Four Hartland wrestlers captured individual titles Saturday during the Kensington Lakes Athletic Association individual championship meet held at Hartland High School, but the Eagles fell one point short to Brighton in the team competition.
“We wrestled awesome,” said Hartland head coach Todd Cheney. “Two of the freshman kids really stepped up; Justin Rollins was unseeded and took sixth and beat the fourth seed, beating the sixth seed along the way, and Nate Hughes was the 11th seed and took fifth.”
Hartland’s four champions were freshman Austin Eicher (112), senior Chase Snider (145), senior John Julien (152), and senior Chad Hunt (160). Junior Matt Ostermiller (189) took second; junior Justin Charneski (171) took third; seniors Keith Boldt (119) and Ross Kantola (125) recorded their 150th victories along with taking fourth and senior Nick Long (215) took fourth; freshman Nate Hughes (103) and sophomore Mitchel Thomas (140) took fifth; and freshman Justin Rollins (130) took sixth. The team finished with 247.5 points.
Eicher improved his record to 42-2, beating the first seed Tyler Foley from South Lyon East 4-2.
“We all did pretty good,” Eicher said. “We could’ve won some matches that we lost, but overall we did pretty good. I would’ve been a lot more happy if we’d beat Brighton though.”
The Eagles have three events next week, including the KLAA Dual Championships in Canton on Monday, team districts Thursday at Lakeland High School and individual districts Saturday at Walled Lake Central.
“It’s just crazy,” Cheney said. “It’s that grind time of the year, and here we go. We’re going at it right away.”
