Home Team Wins 35th Annual Hartland Wrestling Tournament

Eagles take first while also placing 11 individuals in the top four.

The Hartland High School wrestling team continued its impressive start to the season by dominating a tournament it hosted at the high school Saturday, taking first place out of 13 teams, including beating Division 3's third-ranked Lake Fenton, and placing 11 out of 14 wrestlers.

The team finished with five champions: freshman Nate Hughes at 103 pounds, freshman Austin Eicher at 112, senior Chase Snider at 145, senior John Julien at 152 and junior Brian Braun at 285.

Those who placed second include: senior Ross Kantola (125), sophomore Mitchel Thomas (140), junior Matt Ostermiller (189), and senior Nick Long (215). Other placers include: freshman Jon Rollins (119) and junior Justin Charneski (171), both of whom took fourth.

Saturday's victory gives the Eagles their second tournament win. Hartland also is 4-0 on the season in dual meets.

"We did well," Hartland head coach Todd Cheney said. "Shoot, at a tournament like this, to have five champs is awesome. It's hard, though, because when you get to the finals and you lose matches at the end, it puts a sour taste in your mouth. The three matches at the end (171, 189, 215), I felt we could've won, but we fell short."

Eicher, Snider, Hughes, and Braun all stood out, according to Cheney.

Eicher defeated Isaac Jewell from Goodrich in the final match with a major decision, 13-2.

"I did OK," Eicher said. "I just kept on doing what I do in practice and what we keep practicing in the wrestling room, and it worked."

Snider was the outstanding wrestler of the tournament in upper weights for the second tournament in a row. He also won his final match with a 5-3 decision, beating Christian O'Guinn from Lake Fenton, who beat him last year and took seventh in the state.

Hughes and Braun both won their first tournament: Hughes won his final match to Jacob Carley of Lake Fenton with a 9-1 major decision, and Braun beat Tyler Styrk of Belleville with an 8-1 decision.

"I think I did pretty good today," Hughes said. "I came out with a first, so I feel pretty good."

The team travels to Holland on Dec. 18 at 9 a.m. where the Eagles will face some ranked teams.

"St. John's is going to be there (#1in D2), and they're tough as nails," Cheney said. "There's Rockford (#6 in D1) and Hudson (#1 in D4), who is the Division 4 state champs, and also Temperance Bedford (#5 in D1). It's nasty."
