Home Depot Hires 'Dancing Sign Guy' For Higher-Paying Sales Job

Lance Glazier's dancing days appear to be over, at least professionally.

Known around Hartland as the "Dancing Sign Guy," the Grand Blanc single-father of three says he just got a higher-paying sales job with Home Depot. His last day on the corner of M-59 and Old U.S. 23 as a human billboard for was Jan. 2.

"I will miss everyone's smiles on the corners and all those little hands waving out the bus windows, but this is a great opportunity for me and I hope I can be successful for my family and help people in the long run," Glazier said in an email to Hartland Patch. "I'm glad I was able to get to know the wonderful people of Hartland. (It) is quite a blessing to be a part of that community."

A new start

Glazier, 40, took the job after becoming unemployed a year ago, but captured the hearts of many in the community with his upbeat attitude and never-ending dance moves. Following media attention , the community — a story that was last week.

"This is my dream job."

In the new role, Glazier will be selling windows, siding, gutters and insulation out of two Genesee County stores but he can help anyone who contacts him directly. He began a six-week training program last week. He says he could earn much more money than when he was at his previous sales job with Frito-Lay and he likes how making homes energy efficient can help the environment.

"This is my dream job," he said. "I've wanted to get into the insulation business for many years. … I am passionate about this and so excited to be with a company that has been in business for over 30 years and is giving me an opportunity to help people save money and energy."

Hartland is happy for him

Cathy Jones, the owner of who hosted the fundraiser that went to Glazier, said while people will miss his moves, the community will be happy he's found a better job.

"People come in here (and say) they love him," she said. "Everyone wishes him well … Maybe the next one will dance, but he still won't be a Lance."

Glazier said the money helped him buy Christmas gifts, fix his car's heater blower, pay bills and even buy some pants for his new job. He said hopes to come back to Hartland in the spring to fix the grassy area where he stood in front of and maybe even perform a dancing step or two.

He said he's grateful to have been blessed by the help of so many. In reflecting, he said it's possible the dancing helped him stay positive to bring him through this difficult time in his life.

"I've always known to enjoy life — it's why we are alive — maybe I just started practicing it when I started dancing, but it's important to focus on the good and live happy and smile," he said. "And I've learned to keep trying for better — just because you're down, nobody can keep you down but yourself."
