Michigan's largest newspaper features Black Rock Bar and Grill.
The sizzle of steak on a stone in Hartland is getting noticed outside of Livingston County.
Black Rock Bar and Grill was featured in a Detroit Free Press restaurant review last week.
Free Press Restaurant Critic Sylvia Rector tried the restaurant's signature rock-cooked entree. She said while it was juicy and tender it didn't have the charred flavor a grill creates. She also warned against over-cooking and gave a mixed grade on how quickly food and drinks were served, according to the review.
"Rock-cooking may not be the world's best method of cooking, but it's interesting and different -- and clearly popular with many diners," she wrote, adding that the restaurant was packed during her visit.

Black Rock Bar and Grill is one of our favorite restaurants. Their burgers are awesome. Their new appetizers of pretzel bread fondue and sausage and peppers on a stone are wonderful additions to the menu.

We did not enjoy our experience at Black Rock. I received a gift certificate for Christmas, which we tried to use but they did not honor because it was purchased in 2010 and there was some discrepancy with the website it was purchased from. The bartender told us we should take it up with the website, and then walked away from us when I tried to explain it was a gift. They did nothing to make it right. I felt the food and drinks were overpriced and I definitely would not have ordered what I did if we did not have a gift certificate. Yes, it is always crowded, but myself and many of my friends will not be going back.

Had looked forward to Black Rock's opening as another choice for dinners out, but after a couple of visits we've eliminated it from the rotation. The cooking on a hot stone gimmick is all they've got (and it's not even a new idea). The food is glorified bar food, and overpriced at that. We wish them luck, but they're not for us.

If you like wine, DON'T go here. A 4oz. glass of wine is what you get AT BEST....and don't think you get it for less $...pricey! Even our server said, "I know it's small, most of our customers complain". After living in Hartland for 21 years, I was so excited to eat at Black Rock. I would love the owner to know that I was rooting for him, but he's lost me as a customer. If you are an upscale restaurant, you can afford to give your customers a fair amount of wine.

My family and I have given them 4 different trys and all 4 times, the service is extremely slow, the waitstaff have little personality. The owner came to our table the 1st time and apologized and asked us to come back that the service would be much better. We tried it again for my daughters birthday, the orders were wrong, food that was prepared in the back was not hot and pricey, yes very pricey for a "Sports Bar" atmosphere. I believe the novelty of cooking on a stone is not going to stay being all the rave and Hartland will again be in need of a "Family Restaurant". I would not recommend Black Rock.

I agree that Black Rock is a bit on the pricey side, hopefully they will keep adding less expensive items to the menu along with daily specials. If you haven't tried the pizza, you are in for a surprise - it's wonderful! We love the stone cooking also, personally I enjoy having my 1st bite as hot as the last so this is a definete plus. The waitstaff is hit or miss, some are excellent and really know how to treat their customers while others seem to need more training. Since the $$ of a meal is on the high end, the service should match. We were in for dinner last week and the restaurant "hit a home run"! They had the duo from Fenton performing (awesome), our "Tour of the Stone" meal was perfect, and our waiter was right on the mark. It was one of the best overall experiences we have had and will certainly keep us coming back.
