Michigan's Turning 175! What Are Your Favorite Things About the Mitten?

Sign Patch's virtual birthday card to the Great Lake State and post your favorite thing about Michigan in the comments below.

Our beloved mitten turns 175 years old this week, and though that makes the Great Lake State only a toddler in the history of the world, it's certainly a milestone worth celebrating for those who call Michigan home.

Settled by the French, occupied by the British and home to dozens of Native American tribes, Michigan entered the union as the 26th state on Jan. 26, 1837, and has served as a cultural melting pot ever since.

But regardless of our ethnic roots, we're all Michiganders, tied together by our thirst for pop, use of anatomical geography and ever-optimistic outlook on the Lions.

We visit Mackinaw, call everything beyond Detroit "Up North" and sometimes forget there are seasons other than winter and construction.

And though we could go on and on about the things that make Michigan ... Michigan, we'd much rather hear from you. From travel spots and hole-in-the-wall eateries to beloved Motown tunes and Michigan Made products, we invite you to post your favorite things about the state in the comments below.

Happy 175th Michigan!

Did You Know?

  • The name Michigan is derived from the Indian words "Michi-gama" meaning large lake.
  • The state nickname is the "Great Lake State." Others include "Wolverine State" or "Water Winter Wonderland."

  • You are never more than six miles from one of those bodies of water.
  • Anywhere in Michigan, you are within 85 miles of one of the Great Lakes.
  • The "official" state song of Michigan is My Michigan, but the unofficial Michigan, My Michigan to the tune of O Christmas Tree is more commonly known.

I like the fact that Michigan does a great job of continuing to provide us with a means to easily visit the past. We only have to travel a short distance in any direction to find a dirt road, one just like our fore-fathers used in the 1830s, when much of the state was initially founded. Thanks, Michigan for not conforming to the technology pressure of the modern era. :-)

I love the Third Coast, our immense shoreline with its many lighthouses, and especially the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shoreline. On the other end, I love the Big D: Detroit Institute of Arts, Orchestra Hall, Motown, Comerica Park, Hockeytown, steel-making, auto-making, music-making, watching freighters on the Detroit River.

I love living in a historic waterfront community with beautiful houses built in the 1800s and 1900s. Michigan is a great place to raise a family - people appreciate the outdoors and working man blue collar values - we are the heart of America.

There is nothing better than walking through your neighborhood at dusk in the fall
and listening to the crunch of the leaves and enjoying their beautiful colors.

well, i'm from the east coast, so michigan does not seem old to me at all, and what y'all consider history/ old here is recent history/ new where i am from. i am impressed with the northern part of the state, though. the water is beautiful. i'm still a real beach (ocean) lover, but i am really impressed with the lakes. also, i like that michigan seems a bit less polluted than many places on the east coast.

I love Michigan's enthusiasm for bringing in the seasons..I have lived in many states but as the old saying goes "there's no place like home"...Michigan brings in the spring with a feeling of being born again..you feel as if anything is possible.. with excitement, antisipation and the promise of a new adventure. The Summer..if you can' find anything to do... or be involved with, you're probably not in Michigan.. The saying.."Hot dogs, baseball, apple pie and chevrolet" (sorry Fords and Chrysler) seems to come to mind..The cherry blossoms then the cherry festival..canoeing down the Au Sable River, Camp Fires in Northern Michigan..The Dunes, Woodward Dream Cruise..an afternoon in a local park.. There is something for everyone...The Autumn..Where does one begin..the colors alone can take one to Sha-gri-la....the smell of burning leaves (where they are allowed) ...the preparation for the hunt, which for some lasts all year, The cider mills....and no place brings in hay rides and Halloween like the Mitten State...I truly believe Autumn in Michigan brings out the "kid" in all of us...The Winter in Michigan is like a Napping Bear..he may sleep through it all..or may wake up with a venagnce for bing disturbed...The beauty, the frozen lakes..the sledding with hot cocoa, Frankenmuth at Christmas..and of course Tip Up Town in Houghton Lake....Michigan Winters are like a visit with Norman Rockwell and days gone by..

Happy Birthday Michigan...and many happy returns

I love Michigan for everything. Vernors, Sanders, Coney Dogs, etc. And many places to go and see. I love the history. I was born and raised there. I live in Albuquerque, NM now, but my heart belongs there and I still consider myself a Michigander. I love the lakes. I love the small towns there too. There's a whole lot more to see and do there. Happy Birthday, Michigan. I wish I was still there.

Sue: I'm so glad someone wrote this because Motown music is the best thing ever to come out of Michigan, in my opinion :) I'm listening to some Temptations tunes as we speak.

Nancy, I have Smokey on the radio right now. If you have never been to the museum, you should make a point & go. You will be in musical heaven.
