Sophie Flatt, a fifth grader at Farms Intermediate and her older brother Collin, a sixth grader, decided to raise money on their own this year to help fight cancer. According to their mother, the two siblings wanted to find a way to help contribute to their family's team, who will be walking in the Relay for Life event on Saturday.

The goal, according to Kim Flatt, was to each raise more than $100 for their team, "Family Fighters," so the Hartland students decided to start a "penny war" contest in their classrooms, competing boys against girls to see who could raise the most money.

At last count, Mr. Thacker's fifth grade classroom had a grand total of $147.98, with the girls in the lead by almost $37. For Mrs. Berry's sixth grade class, the students had raised more than $43 during last week's tally, and the boys were leading.

Relay for Life, which begins at 9 a.m Saturday at the Hartland High School track will host 24 teams as they walk for 24 hours raising money for cancer research.
