Poll: Most Popular Dog Names of 2011
Does your pooch have one of the top names for dogs? Take our poll and share your pup's name and photo.
Is your best canine buddy named Buddy? Or Bella? Or Max?
If so, you chose one of the most popular names of 2011 for your dog, according to Veterinary Pet Insurance Co (VPI), which sorted its database of more than 485,000 insured pets to determine last year's most popular pet names.
The top 5 dog names were Bella, Bailey, Max, Lucy and Molly. Rounding out the top 10, which showed no change from the previous year, were Buddy, Daisy, Maggie, Charlie and Sophie.
Interestingly, Bella also topped the list of the most popular cat names of 2011.
So what's your dog's name? Take our poll, and if it's not on there, add it to the comments section. And while you're at it, upload a photo of your pooch.

My dog's name is Pedro. He's a rescue, and has been a part of the family for over 13 years. He's a distinguished older gentleman, but still enjoys pulling the innards out of his stuffed toys and playing with our cats.

Do you have a picture? One of our dogs (Dawn Cherry, primarily called Cherry) is a rescued dog. When we got her, she was a puppy. Based on her mother & (I guess) her littermates, we were told she was a Pomeranian -American Eskimo mix. Now that she's more grown, it's clear there's no Pomeranian in her -- she has a naturally bobbed tail, a short (not sure of my terminology -- either rough coat or wire hired) coat, tulip-shaped ears. Different people have guessed that she's either an Australian Shepherd or Cattle Dog -- not sure I could tell the difference.

The real short coats, shorter legs and pointed ears are the Australian Cattle Dog which is totally different from an Australian Shepherd (who really is an American breed, with a misleading name).
One popular feature of the Aussies is a merle pattern coat, but it is not exclusive to Aussies. Another way to tell is a "mane" that is longer and stiffer hairs (usually stands up when the dog is excited), feathering of the legs is also present and often their eyes are bi colored - but not always! There are a lot of variables in Aussies, like my guy has a tail for instance, so it's difficult to differentiate. Some Aussies are bred for working stock and some are for show and both looks are completely opposite. Basically, you can make good guesses but if you are really interested 100% I'd get a doggy DNA test and find out.
Carol Jackson
12:12 pm on Monday, January 16, 2012
Since Cherry is part Eskie, she's not going to look exactly like an Australian Cattle Dog. Since she's a rescue dog, there's no question of breeding her, so her DNA isn't relevant -- it explains certain quirks in her behavior to recognize that she sees us as food-providing cows.
Her eyes are both same color (dark brown -- nearly black) ala an Eskie & she's willowy like an Eskie would look if not for the fluffy fur -- very slender legs & nose. She's slightly taller than I remember our late Eskie being. Loves to jump & run. Her color isn't marled at all - it's that of a Sheltie tricolor.

Danes (AKA German Mastiffs) and other big dogs make great lap dogs - except it is usually only their head that can fit on your lap! We love our Dane and I don't think he has any idea how big he is (155 lbs). He backs up to the couch and literally sits on our laps.

My pound pups are Rip and Reba. Rip is a clown of Charlie Chaplin calibre and is possibly an english setter mix, but who knows. Reba looks like a rough-coated, long-haired rottweiler and I was told she was a rottweiler/giant schnauzer...which is why i refer to her as a schnottweiler :) She is an immovable beast and through puppy hood (which lasted 2 years) she ate the entire interior of my Volvo. I am touched by how many wonderful neighbors I had that I didn't know about. People that know to rescue KNOW you should NOT buy from pet stores. Puppy Mills are the worst cruelty. The stores all tell you they are from good breeders - but they are stretching the definitions big time there.
Also - I just found CARE.COM for pet sitting, baby sitting, tutoring and other types of help. You can put yourself on there to give help or to get help. Check it out if you want to do either - it is pretty cool.

I am grateful to so many who have rescued animals from shelters/rescues and other places. Remember, there are some of the best animals in cages and rescues today waiting for someone to come and fall in love and take them home forever. - check Petfinder.com. Also, don't forget to check at the Local Wyandotte Animals Shelter, WAG rescue and PAWS of Michigan. Some grand dogs and cats there waiting for a forever home.

Other local shelters are Michigan Animal Rescue League and Oakland County Animal Shelter on Brown Rd., Michigan Humane Society and there are so may more.
All of our dogs came from calls either from the vets treating them for the shelters, or the from the shelters direct-we take only those cases that no one wants-we are one of the "last ditch efforts" and it has been worth every dollar we spent and every tear we shed--these "abused/abandoned disposal discards" gave back to us a hundred fold-I wish they could all be here today--God Bless everyone of you that helped a dog find love and shelter in your home, your lives and your heart.

My Dog's name is Maggie (we kept her name since it was already her name since she was a puppy DOB 2006 )and she was rescued from the lovely folks at Wyandotte Animal Control in 2008. She was adopted on Mothers' Day that year after we adopted a Senior Sweetheart we named Kara (also from Wyandotte Animal Control) 2 weeks before Maggie. Kara passed away in Oct. 2010 but she was a very wonderful girl and I would not trade those two and a half yrs for any thing! Maggie was a lot of work as she had been abused before she made it to the pound but the volunteers kept up positive reinforcement and she passed her training, Now she is a happy, well adjusted girl that our human son refers to as his "sister" ;) Kara was a red lab/ chow mix and Maggie is a Yellow lab/ greyhound/ collie mix:)

I have a Ozzy "No More Tears" Ozzdog who is a Lab/Chow/Pit Bull mix and is the light of my life! We rescued him from the Genesee County Animal Control and nursed him back to health.
I have also been blessed to have owned (and been owned by) a; Knuckles, AJ, and Laika previously. :)

I'm coming to this article a little on the late side but what the heck - we have a black and white Springer Spaniel named Nellie. We got the name from "Little House on the Prairie." I,luckily, have a daughter named Laura!
I'm amazed to see two dogs named Pearl on here. This is the name the kids and I wanted to use but the breeder said she prefers her dogs to have two syllable names. I'm not so sure I should have listened to her........

I am the owner of a Chow Chow named Miko, she is 7 years old now. I also adopted a Chow/Sharpei and named her Shiva. They are guard dogs, do great with my kids, dislike strangers and squirrels, and are the laziest dogs I have ever met.

As director of a pit bull rescue, Vigilante Dog Rescue, I have to come up with dozens of names for the dogs we save, as do my awesome foster parents. Here's a few of them:
Falcora, Brownie, Siouxsie, Machiatto, Snowflake, Redman, Tigerlily, Lily, Scout, Leopold, Paris, Daisy, Sammie, and alumni Addy, Izzy, Buzz, Bubsy, Rock Star, Beans, Sassy, Blue One, Blue Two, Spice, Rochelle, Bella.....
The list goes on...and on, and on, and on...
