Spring Home & Garden Show Blooms with Humor
Several seminars, whimsical art and more will cultivate smiles galore.
Gardeners who dig comedy and have a sense of humor will enjoy this year’s Spring Home & Garden Show March 30-April 1. Filling the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, the home-and-garden event blooms with all kinds of comic shows, fun-loving presentations and more.
Take, for example, The Backyard Theater, where eventgoers will hear informative and interesting seminars on curb appeal and sustainable landscape practices, presented by Plymouth-based Michigan Landscape Design Services. Its "Bloomsday Preppers" show, hosted by Bryan Mitnick, will provide an entertaining and animated twist to learning about economic gardening.
“Bryan dresses up as character ‘Austin Flowers,’” explained Shelly Latshaw, a publicist for the event. “The name of his seminar is ‘Armageddon Getting Tired of Replacing My Plants Every Year – I Need Some Bloomsday Advice!’” Farmer John’s Greenhouse in Farmington Hills sponsor that particular show.
Special "Find the Gnome" giveaways also will bring smiles to show patrons., who can enter contests to win prizes by filling out a special coupon and dropping in boxes throughout the show. Coupon flyers will be available at show entrance or download at novihomeshow.com.
Grilling gurus Mad Dog & Merrill will share zany grilling antics and masterful barbecuing talents through humor and recipes, presented by Weber Grills.
On a more serious note, visitors can try to get their toughest gardening questions answered by experts from the Southeast Michigan Nursery & Landscape Association.
Meanwhile, 25,000 square feet of landscaped gardens are sure to inspire new ideas for your own yard. Easter flowers, landscape plants and bulbs will also be available for purchase from various greenhouse and nursery vendors.
Art lovers will want to canvass the indoor art fair, hosted by The Image and Arts Council of Troy. Paintings, pottery, artwork and much more will be available for purchase. “This is a juried show and artworks are selected based on how well they fit or enhance with the overall theme of the show,” said Charlene Brown of The Image and Arts Council.
Be sure to visit the special art area to create a home and garden mural.
