These sugar cookies are by far the most popular Christmas cookie at our house, so popular that we often double or triple this recipe so we can share with others. So what makes these cookies so great? For me it's the sugary sweet taste when decorated with frosting, and the fluffy consistency of the cookie itself.
My mother Colleen has been making these cookies for my family for as long as I remember. They are only made once a year – making them extra special.
This sugar cookie recipe is easy and kid friendly. Nothing says Christmas like cutting out festive shapes in cookie dough with your kids; or gathering around a table with frosting and sprinkles to decorates the dozens of cookies.
To make this recipe you will need the following, if you want a large batch I suggest you double these measurements:
- 3 cups of regular all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 sticks of butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of sugar
For the frosting you will need:
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- Powdered sugar
To start add 3 cups of flour to a large bowl. Next, add 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder to the bowl. Then, add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Next, add two sticks of butter to the flour mix. Next, crack two eggs into a separate bowl. With an electric mixer, beat the eggs. Then, add 1 cup of sugar and beat thoroughly. Mix the butter and flour together until the mixture looks like cornmeal. Add the egg mixture to the flour and butter mixture. After blending you'll have to get your hands dirty and bring the dough together. Form into a ball and place dough in the fridge for one hour to chill. After an hour, roll the dough out on a lightly flour covered surface to the desired thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutters and place on a cookie sheet to cook. Place the cookie sheet in a 375 degree preheated oven. Bake until 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned.
For the frosting mix together milk, powdered sugar, vanilla and butter. Start with one cup of powdered sugar and add a little milk. You are going to alternate adding powdered sugar and milk until you the consistency you like and have enough frosting for all of your cookies. Next, separate the frosting into bowls and add food coloring. Decorate the cookies and enjoy!
