Weekend Planner: Free Christmas Dinner, Live Nativity, Caroling and Open Swim

Here's a look at what's happening around the Hartland area this weekend.

 

1. CHURCH HOSTS LIVE NATIVITY AND CAROLING

Where: Fenton United Methodist Church, 119 S. Leroy St., Fenton

When: 6-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23

Cost: Free

Why go: The nativity, which will be in the courtyard of its north campus building,  features people dressed in costume as well as live animals; caroling also will take place and refreshments are available in the church hall.

2. 'TWEEN TECHIES' MAKE BOOK 'COMMERCIALS' AT LIBRARY

Where: Cromaine District Library, 3688 Hartland Road, Hartland

When: 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 (also offered Jan. 27 and Feb. 24)

Cost: Free, but pre-register at www.cromaine.org or by calling 810-632-5200

Why go: Tweens, bring your favorite book to Cromaine District Library-Village branch and come ready to talk about it. Take turns filming each other with the library flip camera. The book “commercials” will be put on the library’s webpage!

3. HOLIDAY OPEN SWIM

Where: The Aquatic Fitness Center in Hartland High School, 10635 Dunham Rd, Hartland

When: 12:30-2 p.m. and 7:30-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23

Cost: $5 per person (children under the age of three are admitted free of charge)

Why go: Get away from the everyday routine. This event, which is fun for all ages, features access to two pools, hot tub, water slides and a current channel.

4. UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER CONTEST

Where: Comeback Inn, 1451 S. Milford Road, Highland

When: the party gets started about 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 (D.J. Reindeer Ronnie starts at 8 p.m.)

Cost: Free 

Why go: Join us in your brightest, jingliest, fuzziest, and downright ugliest Christmas sweater and spread some holiday cheer!You can say you've already worn the ugly Christmas sweater; plus, there are prizes for the ugliest sweaters!

5. AMERICAN LEGION HOSTS FREE CHRISTMAS DINNER

Where: The Howell American Legion Deveraux Post 141, 3265 W. Grand River Ave., Howell (corner of M-59 and Grand River)

When:  11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 25 on-site; delivered meals for shut-ins are scheduled by phone. You should have called the American Legion by Tuesday, Dec. 20 to participate.

Cost: Free

Why go: This is not just for Howell residents; anyone who needs a meal can take part. It’s a great place to go for a filling Christmas meal and company. Can’t get out of the house? No problem; deliveries are available.
