Hartland High School freshman Michael Anderson — who is a hockey goalie and “100 percent band geek” — is one tough kid. At 14, he’s already endured surgery and chemotherapy to beat back a rare form of cancer and he and his family still need our help. There’s a fundraiser from 8:30 p.m. to midnight Friday at Striking Lanes, 1535 N. Old US 23 that'll include auctioning off premium tickets for Detroit Red Wings, Tigers and Pistons games. Grieving a loved one's death is painful, but somehow it just seems even more unfair when it's unexpected and we don’t know why. For myself, I begin to question why we take someone for granted? Why do we feel that certain friends will always be part of the hometown fabric that gives us a sense of comfort? But then we're reminded with one phone call that the comfort can be taken away. That’s what happened with my friend Craig Thornton. Craig, 44, died Jan 10 after spending the day doing what he loved — ice fishing with his beloved dog, Layla, at his side.
