About this column:

This column will feature letters to the editor. Letters will be edited for grammar, style, brevity and obvious factual accuracy. (We can't check every fact asserted, but if we realize something isn't true, we'll edit it or possibly not run the letter). We highly encourage submissions about 300 words or less. Submit letters or questions to Hartland Editor Tatum Ryan (tatum.ryan@patch.com).
By Jennifer Bauer Passion. Cannot be described in words, it cannot be given or shared with others; it must be felt by the one who finds it. The passion to which I am referring is a deep, all encompassing passion that when found, you may never be the same. I am not the same person who sauntered into eighth grade, confident but a little skeptical of the people and places around me. Every day I tell myself, don’t let the world change you, Jen. But maybe, just maybe, I could be changed for the better. And as soon as I found my passion I realized that it wasn’t the world that has changed me, it …
Dear Hartland Patch: (Wednesday) night's meeting was disappointing to the residents of Tyrone Lake. We found out that all the informational packets we worked so hard to distribute went unread — except for one board member. These packets contained pertinent information regarding Lake Tyrone Sewer System and why the majority of the residents want to keep their sewer system and not hook-up to the Livingston Regional Sewer System. It seems that the basis of information to the Hartland Board members has only been from Brian Jonckheere the County Drain Commissioner- whose interest as I see it, is …
Dear Editor, I was saddened to learn that your community has been littered with Planet Aid and the Institute for International Cooperation and Development (IICD) clothing collection boxes. Both of these non-profit groups are part of "Tvind," a cult-like Danish organization whose followers call themselves the Teachers Group. Most of their board members, and many of the managers, are Teachers Group members. Tvind is the common name given to the collection of over 200 businesses, non-profits, and schools run by member of the Teachers Group. Their net worth is over $860 million USD. Planet Aid is…
Dear Editor Somewhere along the line, most of us have had a teacher who impacted our lives in a profound way.  A teacher who encouraged us to pursue a particular skill or interest, someone who challenged us to achieve more or perhaps a teacher who saw something in us that we were unable or unwilling to see on our own. With this being teacher appreciation week, what better time to reach out and thank the teachers, past and present, who made a difference in our lives and continue to make a difference each and every day. In Hartland, we are blessed with an outstanding cadre of teachers who …
Dear Hartland neighbors, I am writing you about a questionable situation the Hartland Consolidated Schools - Community Education, school superintendent and community education director have created.  As you may know, in February of 2010 the residents and taxpayers in Hartland approved a $28,000,000 bond for improvements to the school district. Some of this money was specifically earmarked for the Community Education department and more precisely the Hartland High School fitness center.  What many people do not know is that the fitness center is open to you - the public - and it is part of …
Cromaine District Library thanks the community for joining in the Zombie Walk on Oct. 22. "Zombies" have received a lot of attention over the past several years, in novels, highly acclaimed television shows, and in big box office films. As a play on the "Zombies-eating-people" theme, we thought having the Zombies donate food to people could be a fun and productive combination. Community members of all ages (babies to 80-year-olds plus dogs joined in, too) brought food, donated money, dressed up as Zombies and created a great afternoon for everyone. Some, not necessarily ready to become a …
As members of Veterans for Peace, my husband, Chuck, and I were supporters of former Col. Ann Wright, VFP member, when she and 37 other Americans tried to sail the U.S. flagged boat The Audacity of Hope to Gaza in July of 2011. Their boat, along with seven other boats carrying many citizens from all over the world, were stopped from even getting out of port, in most cases due to the clandestine threats from the Israeli and U.S. governments towards the countries that the boats were to sail from, Greece being where The Audacity of Hope was impounded. At a public gathering in Hartland in July, …

Congratulations to all those who pitched in on the Hartland Cemetery project. I stopped by the office on Sunday morning (Sept. 11) before heading back to Greenfield Village and saw all the work that was done on Saturday (Sept. 10). Special thanks to Mike Horan and Barbara Walker on leading this project. Proud to be a Hartland Rotarian,Gary J. Cornillaudpresident, Hartland Rotary Club
Hartland Family Dental sponsored “player only” T-shirts on behalf of the Hartland High School Football Parent Club. The club wanted the boys to have shirts that would not be for sale and worn only by our players. Unfortunately, with the many other things that the club helps to fund, there wasn’t enough money for us to do this. Dr. Drew Smith and his wife Jen stepped up and funded the entire project. They are huge Hartland High School football fans and it isn’t surprising that they would step up to help. Last year, they donated custom made mouth-guards to any player on the team who wanted one…
Thanks to everybody who came out to Hartland Meadows on an emergency call on the Fourth of July. There was concern for an elderly neighbor who did not answer his door while his wife was out of town with the only vehicle of the household. I called the Livingston County Sheriff's Department and county EMS, Hartland-Deerfield Fire Authority and sheriff's department were at this house in under five minutes. I wanted to make a personal thank you to all of them for coming out and responding as quick as they did. Thankfully everything turned out well, and again I would just like to say thank you for…
Village Elementary PTO would like to thank all the volunteers for their help at our annual Family Fun Fair and Silent Auction on March 26. With their dedication and hard work the event was a huge success. The money raised will be used to help fund the guided reading program, student self-esteem program, assembly expenses and field trip buses. We thank them again for all their contributions. We would also like to thank all the business and people who donated to the event that includes: ABC Warehouse Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum Bar None Barnes & Noble Belinda Wilkinson Best Buy Better Made Snack …
I wanted to take a minute and say thanks for publishing the information about Fox Ridge in the Jan. 11 story "Deal Aims to Help Recharge Condo Development" and the issues that we've, along with other developments in the area, experienced during the economic downturn. As a president of one of the three association boards of the community, I also want to clarify some of the information for your use and any readers of Hartland Patch.Once the homeowners were able to gain control of the associations, we worked with the vendors who were owed large sums of money (more than $100,000) to negotiate a …
2011 marks the 76th anniversary of Hartland's Memorial Day Activities. Our Memorial Day Parade is a premier event in Livingston County, but residents and community organizations need to be involved with the parade to ensure continuing success. There is great satisfaction from seeing the hundreds of veterans, residents with their children and all the visitors to our Hartland parade. But it takes about 24 to 30 people to make this happen, most behind the scenes.A parade planning meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Crossroads Branch of Cromaine District Library in the community …
