Livingston County Veterans Memorial Rededication Set for Saturday

The Rededication of the newly enlarged and enhanced Livingston County Veterans Memorial is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, on the lawn of the historic Livingston County Courthouse.

1. The program will include representation of all branches of the military. The keynote speaker is John Colone of Pinckney, a Livingston County Vietnam War veteran and chairman of Livingston County Veterans Affairs.

2. In addition to the program, there will be a military helicopter flyover and military vehicles on display on State Street; the event will conclude with 21-gun salute and “Taps.”

3. Built in the 1940s and located on the lawn of the historic Livingston County Courthouse on Grand River Avenue in downtown Howell, the memorial lists the names of the veterans from Livingston County who gave their lives in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

4. The memorial enhancement project, chaired by Louis VanCuyl of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee, received strong community support, both through the sale of engraved bricks that will be set around the monument, and through fundraising efforts.

5. The “new” monument has additional seating, lighting and new landscaping. Also part of the project is the “Ring of Honor,” in which the donor bricks will be set.
