Brighton Roller Dollz Filmed for Possible Quirky Holiday Traditions TV Show

A production team will film Saturday's intra-league bout, 'Twas the Fight Before Christmas,' at Rollerama II.

Brighton, Michigan may soon get a turn in the National TV spotlight, but not because of its long history, its quaint downtown or successful businesses - but because of its roller derby team, The Brighton Roller Dollz.

Roller Dollz Vice President Kelly Genei, also known as Murder City Mistress, said the league was contacted by a production team through its Facebook page  about filming the upcoming December bout for two shows centered around quirky holiday traditions for next year.

"They came across us on the Internet when we were Santa's security team (at Holiday Glow) and asked if they could come out - so they're coming out," she said.

The production team is affiliated with a major cable network. They produce shows which can be picked up by the networks, so it's not for sure if the Roller Dollz segment will ever air, Genei said.

The first show will be a competition of the strangest holiday traditions while the second will be a compilation of strange holiday events across America, according to Genei.

The 'Twas the Fight Before Christmas' bout will take place at Rollerama II on Saturday at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. Admission costs $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Children 12 and under are free with a paying adult - one child per one adult ticket. Additional children cost $6 each.

The Roller Dollz two intra-League teams will battle each other. The event Facebook page has 145 people attending the bout as of Wednesday night.

Genei said some of the girls are a little bit nervous and camera shy about a film crew attending the bout, but she doesn't think the teams will notice them much.

"I think everyone's more excited that little Brighton, Michigan had the opportunity to do this," she said. "We even asked them, 'Are you sure you want us? Do you think we're someone else? You know we're not Detroit, we're Brighton.' And they said that they wanted to come here."

Because of the film crew, Genei said the Roller Dollz are trying to make the event a little more special by getting more festive with all the holiday stuff, like Santa hanging out in the penalty box during halftime.

"We've made a cute sign that says, 'Sometimes Santa's naughty,'" she said. "So then people can get their pictures taken with Santa in the penalty box. We've also got some of our junior skaters who will dress up as elves."

There will also be holiday costume contests and an ugliest sweater contest to get the crowd involved.

"It should be a fun day," Genei said.

The Roller Dollz bout catch phrase says it all, "To the front of the pack, to the front of the wall... Now bash away, bash away, bash away all!"
