My friend Valerie, age 45, felt a lump in her breast so she scheduled a doctor’s appointment to have it checked out. When Val went in for her follow up appointment, nobody thought she would hear the words “It is cancer.”

All I could think after hearing the news was, “I can’t believe it. She is way too young, she has no family history of breast cancer, she has more energy than anyone I know, she is healthy, and she is my best friend.

It was an especially hard blow for Valerie because she tragically lost her husband four years ago to a heart attack. Valerie's best supporter is gone and she is relying on us for help.

On January 9, 2013, Valerie will undergo a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Valerie is a strong woman. If you know her, you know she is a ball of fire! She is independent, smart, funny, and tough as nails. She has the spirit to fight her cancer, but needs everyone’s help to win!

Now- why she needs your help:

  • Valerie does not have health insurance. About four years ago, her husband passed away unexpectedly. Valerie retained health coverage for three years after his passing but just recently lost her coverage. This makes it very tough to pay for daily living expenses and medical bills and there are so many other expenses to be paid for including medications, shots, gas money to get to and from the hospital, additional surgeries, and the list keeps going.

We don't know what the total expenses are going to be - but we HAD to get something started.

We are raising money to offset/assist with these expenses. Our hope is that we alleviate that financial burden so Valerie can concentrate on getting better.  The costs to maintain daily living expenses while she fights this cancer are continually mounting. It is important that Valerie focus all of her energy and strength on winning this battle. She will not be able to work the two jobs she has during her fight against breast cancer. Both businesses where Valerie is employed are helping in her fundraising efforts.
