It's Showtime for the 4-H Rangers at the Fowlerville Family Fair

Hartland-based group volunteer and compete at countywide agricultural event and carnival.

When showing poultry at the 125th Fowlerville Fair, Emma Allen of the 4-H Ranger group of Hartland says don't outshine your animal.

“When showing animals in general you need to wear a white long sleeve top or a white coat, hair pulled back neatly, dark jeans or pants and boots — This presents a neat and clean look and the judges won’t be distracted from the reason you are there which is to show your animal," advised Emma, the club's vice president, to a group of her fellow 4-H'ers during a recent meeting.

"Jewelry, shorts, hats, gum chewing and nail polish are some of the main items you want to stay away from."

Emma's talk was part of a meeting to prepare members — whose ages range from 5-18 — for Fowlerville Family Fair that starts Monday and runs through July 30 at the Livingston County Fairgrounds. The meeting was part of a year-long focus to prepare for the event that this week included volunteering to clean barns and help prepare the grounds.

The fair is the biggest event of the year for the club and gives the group of more than 130 members the opportunity to compete for ribbons. Events range from showing animals that range from sheep and horses to cats and guinea pigs to presenting projects such as model rocketry and cake decorating.

Jim Sparks, a 4-H Ranger adult leader, said the activities provide leadership development and build self-esteem while having fun. It's something the Rangers don’t always even realize.

“These are all life lessons young people need to know,” says Sparks.
