With Video: Hartland Students Are Encouraged to Stay Active and Play60

Farms students won a $500 grant from the Detroit Lions.

For the second year in a row,  participated in the Play60 event, sponsored by the Detroit Lions and the American Heart Association.

The campaign is designed to tackle childhood obesity and encourage children to get active for at least 60 minutes a day.

At the beginning of the year, the students were introduced to the program and taught the importance of staying active. Throughout the year, a group met to reinforce healthy habits and stay fit.

"There was a group between 40-50 students, that met every month for two hours with Hannah and Raven, two high school students that came over and facilitated that and learned about being healthy and exercising and they took that back to their classrooms,"said Hartland parent and organizer of the Play60 event at Farms, Cindie DeWolf.

Beginning in April, each student charted their activity and kept a log. Their total number of minutes was submitted to the Detroit Lions for the Play60 competition, and the school was awarded a $500 grant for coming in second place and being considered an "active" school.

On Thursday, in celebration of the students' hard work and to encourage more fun activity, the school hosted their second annual flag football event. Several Hartland High School football players were also invited to coach the younger students.

It's an event that students enjoy, according to DeWolf, being that it's also a break from their routine, and they get to enjoy being outside.
