Big News Around You: Brandon Hayes Found Guilty in Dominick Calhoun's Death, Michigan Couple Survive Cruise Ship Disaster

Here are five top stories from around the Hartland area and beyond this week.

1. The story of Dominick Calhoun, 4, an Argentine Township boy who was beaten to death by his mother Corrine Baker's ex-boyfriend Brandon Hayes, continued on Thursday. A jury found Hayes guilty on 10 counts, including child abuse and torture, the Livingston County Press & Argus reported. Sentencing could take place in Genesee County on Feb. 27, and Hayes could face up to life in prison. Many Patch readers commented on the tragic case.

2. On Sunday, Fenton Patch reported that by the quick thinking of a 6-year-old girl and the Fenton Fire Dept.

3. A Livingston County teen, Payton Reilly of Howell, will be competing in the 54th annual Distinguished Young Women of Michigan Scholarship Program next weekend at Saline High School, according to WHMI-FM (93.5).

4. Brighton Patch did a story on for an event sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, , The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, , the Alzheimers Association and the Living ARC.

5. The Times Herald in Port Huron reported Tuesday that a local doctor and his wife, Steve and Kathy Ledtke of Fort Gratiot, survived the sinking of the Costa Concordia cruise ship on Jan. 15, near Italy. Afterward, the Ledtkes were able to tell their family they were safe via a short Facebook message.
