Music From Bagpipes Fills the Air at Spicer's in Hartland

This short clip from Sunday provides a glimpse of activities at the cider mill.

As a fellow musician, it was an easy decision for Dallas Barr to tape a clip of a bagpipe trio performing Sunday at and post it on YouTube.

"I love music," said Barr, a Folwerville resident who a member of the Flint-based band Covert. "These guys are great."

Spicer Market manager Will Cartwright said this is the fourth year the trio came to Spicer's and they typically play one day the first weekend in October.

The act started when Mike McKinnon, an employee at the time, decided to bring his bagpipes to work one day and play on the porch, Cartwright said. The response was so positive, so that led him to enlist some friends he plays with in the Detroit-based St. Andrew's Pipe Band to make it an annual event, he said.

"You don't see (bagpipes) very often," he said. "People really liked it."

Barr was at the cider mill with his wife Jamie and their three children: Ella, 7, Evan, 4, and Eva, 2. Barr, who is 1992 Brighton High School graduate, has been going to Spicer's ever since he was old enough to walk and is continuing the tradition. His grandfather, Stan Barr, owns a farm at the corner of Clyde Road and Old U.S. 23.

"It was a great day," he said.
