American Red Cross Says Blood Donations Needed
Supply called 'critically low' as upcoming drives are at St. John Catholic and Chilson Hills churches.
The Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross — which includes Livingston County — is aggressively seeking donors, calling supplies "critically low," according to recent news releases.
The low supplies mean some blood types, particularly O-negative, are on back order, the releases said.
The region, which encompasses 65 of Michigan's 83 counties that lie outside of most of metro Detroit, is down more than 1,100 units from this month's goal, including down 100 from Livingston County, according to J. Michael Lenninger of the Livingston County chapter.

Red Cross officials say the need stems from recent disasters, such as the severe tornado in Joplin, MO, and because summer months traditionally draw fewer donors, releases say. As an incentive, everyone who attempts to donate blood this summer has a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card, a $125 Meijer gas card and/or a $500 gift card to Best Buy.
