Animals Seized in Deerfield Township Up for Adoption This Weekend

About half of the animals recently removed from a Deerfield Township property — 27 cats and nine horses — will be available for adoption at two upcoming events after the owner gave up ownership, the Michigan Horse Welfare Coalition and Livingston County Animal Control announced in a news release Wednesday.

The cats will be available for adoption from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at the "Ruff and Stuff Pet Fest" at Halmich Park, 3001 13 Mile Rd, in Warren, the release said. Those interested in adopting should look for the Livingston County Animal Control booth.

In addition, both horses and cats will be available from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the "Livingston County Loves Pets" Emergency Adoption event at two Deerfield Township locations. The horses will be at Hardy Farms, 7215 N. Latson Rd, while remaining cats will be at Country Kennels, 6346 Green Road. Hardy Farms telephone number is 517-548-1898 while Country's is 517-548-2202.

The animals , discovering urine-soaked, windowless rooms and dirty stalls, the release said. Animal control is now caring for three dogs, three rabbits, two chickens, two guinea pigs, and four sheep from the property at the county shelter or in foster homes, or have already been adopted into new homes. The cats and horse have been held at separate locations because of the large number of animals involved, the announcement said.

"After all they've been through, we hope these wonderful animals will get the chance to go to new and loving homes," said Jodi Louth, Hay Bank coordinator of the Michigan Horse Welfare Coalition. "The conditions they endured in that barn and in the home were horrific; now we hope they can finally experience the clean, caring environment they deserve."

All the animals have received relevant vaccinations and tests as part of medical evaluations. The cats, which will have a $10 adoption fee, have been either spayed or neutered. There is no fee for the horses, although donations to the Michigan Horse Welfare Coalition are welcomed.

"Some of the irresistible cats who are eager to start their lives in a new home include 'Petunia,' a jolly black and white tuxedo girl who loves to be cuddled, and 'Milo,' a lanky tiger cat with comically large ears who wants to be everyone's friend," the release said.

"Horses available for adoption include 'Dan,' a very handsome older thoroughbred gelding and former racehorse who has a heart as big as he is; 'Mandy,' a Morgan mare and former lesson horse who just wants to be loved for who she is and to be able to feel the sun on her back again; and 'Magic,' an adorably petite 12-year-old Arabian mare who is light on her feet and has great potential, with proper training, to be riding horse."
