Expect Snow, Slick Spots on Roads Friday in Livingston County, Region

Wintery weather back with 2 to 5 inches predicted through the end of the day Friday during what's been an unusually warm January.

Jack Frost is returning from vacation tonight to the Hartland and Brighton areas with 1 to 3 inches of snow overnight and another 1 to 2 inches Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

As the temperatures fall below freezing, some slippery spots will develop on area roads," said a special weather statement. "Motorists are urged to drive with caution overnight."

The overnight low will be about 25 degrees, but temperatures will only reach about 27 during the day Friday as winds go from 10 to 14 miles per hour overnight to 17 to 21 mph with gusts as high as 29 mph.

While Michigan residents have enjoyed a reprieve from Old Man Winter so far this season, Joe Clark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s White Lake office is reminding Michiganders that we're not out of the clear, yet.

"Certainly rain in January is not typical for Michigan, but it's not unprecedented,"  Clark said.

Clark attributes warmer weather in the Metro Detroit area due to a northern jet stream that is slowly moving south, causing rain and autumn-like temperatures.

“Beyond that, it’s hard to predict when we could see the winter Michigan is known for. The weather pattern is in flux but we’re not in the clear yet by any stretch," Clark said. "The potential for stronger weather could still get here late.”

Clark said the Metro Detroit area has had less than an inch of snow in January five times throughout its history.

“What we’re experiencing is uncommon, but we’re not in unprecedented historic territory yet,” he said.
