Hartland Chamber Sponsoring Scarecrow Contest for Heritage Day

Local businesses, organizations encouraged to enter community-building event.

The is organizing a first-ever scarecrow contest to encourage community building for Hartland's upcoming Heritage Day in September.

"We longed wanted to increased the broader community awareness of Heritage Day," said Cromaine District Library Director Ceci Marlow, who is helping oversee the effort.

Flexibility and creativity is encouraged with area businesses and organizations advised to use whatever makes sense to create the entry — from the traditional straw to the untraditional plastic grocery bag. Fashion and location, too, can vary.

"Your scarecrow doesn't have to be a typical scarecrow," Marlow said. "Your scarecrow could wear a bikini or sit in a lounge chair. Whatever fits your fancy or taste. It's really just to get people wondering — what's that there for. … You can have some fun with it."

The scarecrows would be displayed around the community the week before Heritage Day from Sept. 10-16. Those groups without a location are encouraged to ask an area business to host their entry. People's Choice Awards for most interesting, most historic and most colorful will be announced at noon on Heritage Day (Sept. 17).

Organizers also say the event is designed to involve new and overlooked businesses in the community while showcasing local artistic talent. The contest also focuses on a craft that's part of Hartland's agricultural heritage.

So far, the library, the Hartland Women's Club, and are among groups and businesses who have already expressed interest.
