Hartland Man Accused of Attacking Girlfriend Bound Over for Trial

Victim testifies during preliminary exam that he threatened to hit her with a baseball bat.

HOWELL — A Hartland man who police say tried to hit his girlfriend with a baseball bat has been bound over for trial on multiple felony charges that also include a five-hour standoff with police.

The victim, 56, said in court this week that Robert William Nyilas, 38, came after her on Aug. 14 after she presented him with the bill for breaking her arm during a previous argument in July. She testified during a preliminary examination Wednesday before 53rd District Court Judge Carl Sue Reader.

Nyilas has posted 10 per cent of $50,000 bond pending his next court appearance, according to a court records, and will be scheduled for a pre-trial conference before Circuit Judge Michael Hatty. He is charged with felonious assault, aggravated assault, resisting police and malicious interference of telecommunications.

During the incident, police say Nyilas also grabbed her cell phone so she couldn't call 911. The woman fled across the street to a neighbor's house, where she called police. Nyilas left their residence and went to his parents' house in Deerfield Township.

The tactical team for the Livingston County Sheriff's Department was called in when police say Nyilas refused to come out of the home. He was taken into custody after police, armed with search and arrest warrants, forcibly entered the home.
