Hartland Test Scores Mixed on Michigan Merit Exam
District above state averages as three subjects rise while two drop and ACT scores remain the same.
Hartland High School students improved modestly in reading, writing and math, but dropped slightly in science and most drastically in social studies while the ACT average remained unchanged, according to this district's 2011 Michigan Merit Exam results released 10 a.m. Tuesday.
All the scores remained higher than statewide averages, results show.
In Livingston County, Hartland ranked second in reading, writing, math, and on ACT averages, but tied for third in science and was fifth in social studies. Of the five school districts, Brighton ranked first in all five subjects and in ACT scores.

Statewide, officials said Tuesday that scores continue to climb with the percentage of students achieving proficient or advanced improving since 2007 on all subjects except social studies, although some scores dropped year-to-year, such as reading from 65 to 63 percent.

In addition, 17 percent of students meet all four of the ACT college-ready benchmarks, a slight increase over 2010.
"Students are being challenged with greater rigor and are achieving at higher levels," said state Superintendent Mike Flanagan in a news release. "Michigan educators are to be commended for the efforts they put in to help more students learn and succeed."
The test is administered to high school juniors and eligible seniors typically over a three days in March. In Hartland, the numbers include students from both Hartland High School and the district's alternative high school, LEGACY.
