House Hunt: Hartland Historic Home For Sale

A piece of Hartland history — the former Lemen Hotel and Boarding House — is now on the housing market.

The asking price is $139,900 for a home that online Hartland Township records say was originally built in 1835.

But the 3,000-square foot building at the corner of Avon and Phelps streets is best known as a bustling hotel early in the 20th century after Cordy and Gertrude Lemen bought it in 1919, according to the Hartland Area Historical Society's book, Hartland: Weaving the Past with the Present.

In the 1920s, the main highway from Flint to Ann Arbor passed through the downtown and traveling salesmen would often stay overnight, the book said.

In addition, many construction workers for projects such as the Hartland High School that was completed in 1921 and Waldenwoods would eat and board there. Local educators, including Superintendent W.D. White and his wife, also stayed while they taught school, the book said.

"It was a very busy town back in the 1920s, even in to the 30s and 40s," said Hildy Foley, vice president of the society.

The building underwent a renonvation following a second story fire several decades ago, Foley said. It currently is a rental with an upper flat and lower main home, according to its real estate listing.

"It looks nothing like the original home," she said. "The outside facade is all different."
