Michigan Postcard: Backyard Harvest

At-home gardens delight with fresh vegetables and fruit.

With winter just around the corner, some of us are already longing for fresh produce from our gardens or nearby farmers markets.

Tenely Smith of Hartland shared this photo of a late August harvest from her garden. Smith said she loves to cook with her fresh produce and share it with friends.

"I picked this bushel full in late August. ... Our garden is big – about 30' x 100'   fenced in to keep the deer out. I grow heirloom tomatoes that I start from seed, asparagus, garlic, corn, beans, lettuce, potatoes, strawberries, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, peas, zucchini and several herbs," she said. "The sunflowers are 'volunteers.' I planted a row of mixed sunflowers two or three years ago. The seeds that fell sprout each spring and I let them grow."
