UPDATED: Flood Warning in Place for Area Rivers

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for area rivers including the Huron near Hamburg where the river is expected to expected to crest above flood stage on Tuesday.

The area was reported just below flood stage early Friday at 6.4 feet and is expected to crest at 7 feet causing moderate flooding, the warning said. Flood stage is 6.5 feet in that area.

Other rivers included in the warning were the Shiawassee, Clinton, Rouge and Lower Rouge.

No significant rain is expected through Saturday, although there will be a chance of thundershowers through 2 p.m. Sunday. The forecast for Memorial Day is for sunny weather with a high of 87 degrees.

Thursday

The National Weather Service had issued a flood warning for much of Southeast Michigan including the following counties: Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Livingston, Macomb, St. Clair, Monroe and Lenawee. 

The flood warning, which began Thursday, was in effect until 11:30 p.m. Friday.

"Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots,” according to the NWS warning. "Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle."

More thunderstorms were expected to hit the area again Friday afternoon and evening, according to the NWS. Anywhere between 2 to 4 inches has already fallen in southeast Michigan and more is expected.
