Technology and Safe Graduations

Ask a Trooper from Sgt. Mark Thompson of the Michigan State Police-Brighton Post.

Technology is a wonderful thing.  When used appropriately it makes our lives better and most times easier.  But then you have to wonder about the some of the technologies which have been developed.

The IPhone application which makes the phone flash like a police light is one of those technologies that make some of us ask the question, “What were you thinking?”

Recently, in another part of the State of Michigan two individuals utilized this application to make a traffic stop on another motorist.  The motorist became suspicious and contacted police and the two individuals were apprehended.

Citizens and police officers take a dim view of people who impersonate police officers. MCL 750.215 covers impersonating a police officer which can result in a one year misdemeanor or a four year felony charge.

If you think someone is at your residence impersonating a police officer call 911.  If the person is a real police officer they will be contacted by the 911 center and the dispatch center will confirm the person is a police officer to you.  Do not call a telephone number given to you by the person you suspect may not be a police officer as it could be fake.

If you are a driver and suspect you are being pulled over by someone posing as a police officer, maybe using the “police light” IPhone application, call 911.  The dispatch center will confirm if a police officer is pulling you over.  If it is not a police officer then real police officers will be dispatched to stop the individual and we’ll handle things from there.

It is now the season for high school graduation parties.  Parents, if you are hosting one, don’t serve alcohol to your underage guests.  Nothing good can come from this and a whole lot of bad could happen.  Utilizing a designated sober driver is always a good idea.
