The Well-Lit Image.....

photography 101, photography blog, footprints photography, senior portraits, professional photographer Erin Drallos of Footprints Photography®.

Lighting can make all the difference in your images. Even on overcast days, there is directional light. In harsh sunlight, you can find open shade or put your subject’s back to the light source for some beautiful backlighting. Don’t be afraid to use your flash, either on or off camera, to create fill in and properly illuminate the face.

This past weekend was a perfect example of a day where one could if they wanted to learn how to deal with different natural light situations in one afternoon. Saturday, at the Orchard Lake St. Mary's Polish Festival and Fair, I captured a few examples.

Although I did not take a flash with me, I tend to shoot all natural light.  I do not like on camera flash in any circumstance and really like to avoid the dreaded outlining shadow around faces, from bad flash photography.

I think I drove my daughter Chloe and her friend Grace nuts as I tried to catch them in different lighting situations to empahasize this post.  I chose to keep everything in color highlighting the fair and what happens when the sky goes dark and they turn the lights on. Such a great effect.

All images shot with my Canon 24-70/2.8L.  I always shoot on Aperature priority and adjust my iso/shutter speed as I see fit to get the effect I want.  Setting noted at the bottom of the images.

Thank you to Chloe Drallos and Grace Bohlen for putting up with me at the fair.  And to Carrigan Drallos great photobombing.
