"Thinking Dolphin"

Meet Dr. Diana Reiss, an internationally-recognized cognitive psychologist and research in animal cognition and communication. Dr. Reiss directs a research program investigating dolphin cognition and communication.

Her research focuses on dolphins and elephants, and she has successfully demonstrated that Bottlenose dolphins and Asian elephants possess the rare ability for mirror self-recognition previously thought to be restricted to humans and great apes.

Dr. Reiss’ efforts also involve the rescue and rehabilitation of stranded marine mammals including the successful rescue of “Humphrey the Humpback Whale.” Her advocacy work in conservation and animal welfare has focused on the protection of dolphins in the tuna-fishing industry, and efforts to bring an end to the killing of dolphins in drive hunts in Japan.

Her work has been featured in hundreds of international and national publications and TV segments and features. She was the scientific advisor for the Oscar-winning film, “The Cove,” and is the author of “The Dolphin in the Mirror: Exploring Dolphin Minds and Saving Dolphin Lives.”
