'Reach for the Stars' with a Summer Reading Challenge

Are you looking for a summer reading challenge to have with your family? How many minutes to you thing your children can read or be read to for the next two weeks?

Hello everyone!

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend. I sure did. I was at the Hartland Memorial Day Parade passing out pencil flags with information about a Summer Reading Challenge for the children and families of Hartland. That’s when it hit me — I should be sharing this info with you all, too.

Anne Conrad, one of Livingston Educational Services Agency’s speech language pathologists partnered up with Usborne Books (me) to coordinate a program to keep the kids reading during the summer months. The program is called Reach for the Stars. It is an official program that the company I work for puts on for groups, organizations, schools, and whole communities.

Although I am promoting this program as a part of my job, I am also doing this because of my passion for reading and the importance of literacy.

We've already held are one open house session at Hartland’s own today, and we'll be holding another 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Stop in for some coffee or lemonade on me, get some great info and join the challenge.

The idea behind Reach for the Stars is to have children pledge to read or be read to for 30 minutes a day for 10 days totaling at least 300 minutes! We have found this is enough time for them to develop a positive reading routine that we hope will continue.

Are you up for the challenge? Let me know if you want to take the challenge. I would love to see people virtually committee to doing this with there families for the next two weeks. Keep me posted, share stories, motivate others to add reading to their daily routine…Ready…Set…READ!

I will keep you all posted with the progress of the physical program. Can’t wait to see how many minutes our Hartland children can read in the next two weeks. This is going to be FUN!
