Networking is Key to Job Opportunities

Career counselors, old classmates and former co-workers can provide great job leads.

Things are looking up.

I have been networking and keeping in touch with old classmates and employees and I have found a few career opportunities in my post-graduate job search. I have been looking for jobs both in Columbus, OH, and the Ann Arbor area. My main goal is to move back to the Hartland area.

I am keeping my options open and I am willing to research different avenues that I can use with my marketing degree. I would like to work for a branding company, but I am willing to try new things. Branding companies help clients re-brand their company image and will do a variety of services to help with a launch of a new product, change their company logo, or launch a campaign. These companies do everything from creating new business cards to internet marketing. I'm not throwing this goal out, but in the mean time, I'll keep my options open.

So that means on a daily basis I check for new job postings online through Monster, Career Builder, and a local website in the Columbus area. I have also been keeping in touch with my career counselor from Eastern Michigan University, whom I've been receiving e-mails from about up coming interviews and opportunities in the Ann Arbor area.

In addition, I was recently contact by a financial consulting firm and have started going through the interview process. The next step is a job shadow to determine if this is the right career for me. The position would require me to help clients create financial goals and map out their future. The job would also require me to sell insurance and other financial services. The position sounds very challenging, yet rewarding. The position has so much potential for growth and rewards. I'm looking forward to what this opportunity may bring. The best part about this job, is that I would be able to relocate to the Hartland area.

Aside from this consulting firm, I have also been in contact with other firms who are recruiting through the university. My plan is to head up to Ann Arbor for a few days and knock out some interviews. I also came across a job for a large digital marketing company, headquartered in Michigan.

Networking has helped me immensely. Like I stated earlier, I have been in contact with my career recruiter, but I have also communicated with old classmates and together we have shared information and advice.

Even if these leads don't follow through, I've started to feel more confident in my job search. Talking with somebody who you respect and can receive honest advice is also a great way to bounce ideas and gain valuable advice. Years ago, I was told by my boss that finding a mentor is one of the best things you can do for yourself. She was right. Finding a mentor is a great way to receive help and advice. So, if you don't already have a mentor, I'd suggest you find that person who you respect and knows your goals.

That's all for now. I thought I'd share my job search update. Hopefully, other people can understand where I'm coming from, and perhaps you're in the same boat I am!
