Pediatric Physical Therapy: Specialized Care for Our Most Special Patients

When it comes to the littlest of our patients, we can’t always treat them like we would adults.  For these patients, Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists - an ATI Physical Therapy Company, offers pediatric physical therapy, aimed at improving the lives and daily function of children suffering from a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions.

Sarah Goncalves, Pediatric Physical Therapy Director with Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists, talks about her favorite aspects of taking care of this population, and what makes pediatric physical therapy so unique. “I love the challenge of incorporating play and motivational factors with functional activities for all age groups.  It's fun having a three-month-old one hour, and an eight-year-old the next.  It makes every day unique!  Children have no hesitation about participation, no concept of the words "I can't" and spirits that can lift anyone in the room, no matter what their personal struggles may be.  They inspire me every day!”

How is Pediatric PT Different from “Regular” PT?

Pediatric physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy, provided by clinicians who have specific training in this area.  It incorporates knowledge from several dimensions of practice - mainly neurological, orthopedic, and developmental.  Unlike adults, young children may not understand exactly why they're in therapy, so making play, family involvement and one-on-one care are essential tools for success.

What Age Group Does Pediatric PT Treat?

Children are often referred as young as birth and as old as 18.  There is no age limit, and since pediatric physical therapists have the most comprehensive knowledge of childhood conditions, we often have older "kids" coming back well in their 20s.

Pediatric Physical Therapy is a specialized treatment and is offered at select MRS locations, including the Hartland clinic at 10860 Highland Rd.  To find a location near you, and to inquire about pediatric physical therapy, visit www.ATIpt.com.
