Array of Veterans Day Celebrations Dot Area

No events are planned in Hartland, so the head of American Legion Post 415 is recommending ones nearby.

World War I officially ended in June 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed; however, the fighting had stopped seven months earlier — on Nov. 11, 1918.

In the following November, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11, 1919, as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, now more popularly known as Veterans Day.

The national holiday honors American veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice for their country.
