Farms Intermediate Students Demonstrate Phone Book Recycling and Say 'Good Morning, Hartland!'

It's Thursday. Here are some tidbits of news and information that we hope you'll find useful or entertaining.

Please also don't miss our video greeting (at right) from Hartland teacher Janet Chodos and some of her students at , who are encouraging members of the community to during a drive that lasts until Dec. 12. Those interested can drop off books in a Dumpster in the Farms parking lot. Last year, for collecting the most books in Livingston County.

1. The weather

Expect clouds, flurries early and possibly some snow showers later in the day (30 percent chance), although there will be no significant accumulations, according to The Weather Channel's forecast for Hartland. The temperature should reach 36 degrees as winds will be out of the west at 18 miles per hour. Tonight, a few flurries might linger followed by clearing skies as the thermometer drops to 25.

2. Fuel prices

Here's a quick daily survey of the regular per-gallon price, according to gasbuddy.com —

  • : $3.39
  • Mobil: $3.49 (cash is 10 cents lower)
  • Shell: $3.59
  • Lowest price at Hickory Ridge and M-59 in Highland: $3.29 at Citgo.
  • Lowest price in the Fenton area: $3.18 at the Mobil station at N LeRoy and S Long Lake and the Clark station at N LeRoy and Third.
  • Lowest price in the Brighton area: $3.31 at Costco, 6700 Whitmore Lake Rd and at the Citgo Station at E Grand River and O'Doherty (with cash).

3. Planning Commission meets

The Hartland Township Planning Commission is holding a 7 p.m. meeting Thursday at Township Hall, 2655 Clark Rd, that includes a proposal permit to extend permits for a gas processing plant, 13750 Lone Tree Road, from 2014 to 2019. The applicant is Merit Energy.

The Hartland forensics program is holding a 6 p.m. LitSlam! fundraiser Thursday at , 11325 Highland Rd. Members of the program will present stories and poems during the event. Organizers say members of the public who want to participate should sign up by emailing HartlandForensics@yahoo.com.

Congrats to Tammy Chinn for getting — What local church first met in 1971 (happy 40 years, BTW) at the Hartland Music Hall and opened its own location in 1985? Answer: The .

Thursday's question: Melvin Burgess started this Hartland band in 1894. It performed at social functions for about 50 years and was known for serenading businesses for treats after its practices. What was it's name? Please answer in comments.
