Humane Society of Livingston County Says Happy Holidays and 'Good Morning, Hartland!'

It's Wednesday and Christmas is only four days away. Here are some tidbits of news and information that we hope you'll find useful or entertaining.

1. The weather

Rain is likely, especially after 7 a.m., as temps remain steady at about 39 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Calm winds will pickup to west northwest between 5 and 8 miles per hour. Chance of rain is 70 percent. Tonight, the rain ends under mostly cloudy skies, with a low around 32.

2. Fuel prices

Here's a quick daily survey of the regular per-gallon price, according to gasbuddy.com —

  • : $3.13
  • Mobil: $3.22 (cash is 10 cents lower)
  • Shell: $3.39
  • Lowest price at Hickory Ridge and M-59 in Highland: $3.12 at Citgo.
  • Lowest price in the Fenton area: $3.08 at seven stations including three on Owen Road at U.S. 23.
  • Lowest price in the Brighton area: $3.05 at Costco at 6700 Whitmore Lake.

3. Township offices closed through Tuesday

Hartland Township Hall begins its holiday hours today, closing through Tuesday, .

The hall will be open Wednesday and Thursday next week as officials anticipate end of the year tax payments, which also can be left in a drop box outside or paid at or banks in Hartland.

Offices will also closed Monday, Jan. 2, as part of the New Year's holiday.

Treasurer Kathie Horning said all payments picked up from the dropbox when offices reopen in 2012 will be dated as received on Dec. 31.

4. Hartland resident publishes letter about Gingrich

Hartland resident Mares Hirchert criticized Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich for his comment that the Palestinians as a people were invented, according to the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

"Newt's remark may be another one of his 'mistakes' for which he eventually will be asking God's forgiveness," Hirchert wrote. "Ilan Pappe, one of Israel's 'new historians,' writes about the history of Israel's creation in 1948, and the corresponding expulsion or flight of 700,000 Palestinians in the same year."
