The Livingston County Drain Commissioner Says Recycle Batteries and 'Good Morning, Hartland!'

1. The weather

Expect mostly sunny skies with a high near 42 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There should be a southwest wind between 7 and 16 miles per hour with gusts as high as 22 mph. Tonight, there's a 50 percent chacne that winter weather reappears with rain and snow after 3 a.m. as temps fall to 31.

2. Fuel prices

Here's a quick daily survey of the regular per-gallon price, according to gasbuddy.com —

  • : $3.39
  • Shell: $3.45
  • Mobil: $3.49 (cash is 10 cents lower)
  • Lowest price at Hickory Ridge and M-59 in Highland: $3.26 at Citgo.
  • Lowest price in the Fenton area: $3.24 at six stations including four on Owen at U.S. 23.
  • Lowest price in the Brighton area: $3.23 at Costco at 6700 Whitmore Lake Rd.

3. Spend a week at Hartland's version of Hogwarts

A few openings remain for the Spend a Week at Hogwarts academy at the Cromaine District Library where participants are treated to daily Harry Potter-themed activities. The series runs daily this week from 2-3 p.m. starting Monday at the main branch with an introduction to "Hogwarts and Sorting." Other days are:

  • Tuesday — "Potions Class"
  • Wednesday — "Divination Class,"
  • Thursday — "Quddich,"

4. River Community Church, Hartland students, OLHSA Aid Seniors

Several groups including the River Community Church organized an effort to connect with area seniors during the holiday season, according to an article in the Livingston County Daily Press and Argus.

Fifth- and sixth-grade students tied 40 fleece blankets at the River that were later distributed Dec. 10 during the Livingston Christmas Celebration, an event put together by the Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency, several local churches and students at .

"It made me realize that there's a lot we take for granted, like getting something on Christmas Day," said Amber Smith, a high school senior who helped organize the event as part of her DECA project.
