In Memoriam: Battle Against Cancer Fought with 'Grace and Courage'

Dietlind M. Lawrence 

Age 52 of Howell, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday evening, January 24, 2014. Born in Detroit on June 17, 1961, she was the daughter of Wilhelm K. and Elaine D. (Ritter) Mayer. Prior to becoming a full-time mother, Dietlind was employed by Barton Malow Company in Detroit and then Turner Construction Company in Chicago, Illinois. Beloved wife of Jim Lawrence whom she married in Dearborn, Michigan on May 30, 1987.

Loving mother of Kathryn and Ryan Lawrence. Also survived by her mother, Elaine Mayer of Brighton and her sister, Heidi Mayer of Park Ridge, Illinois. Dietlind will be remembered for her great devotion to her family, her love of life, contagious laugh and ever-present wit. Her fight against ovarian cancer was waged with grace and courage. Her family and friends will forever hold her up as an example of steadfast determination and strength.

Alice M. Krupa 


Age 80, long-time Brighton area resident and formerly of Fairhope, Alabama, passed away January 25, 2014 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor. She was born June 14, 1933 in New Hudson, a daughter of Thomas E. and Genevieve (Mahoney) Kelly. On February 14, 1953 she was married to Philip Krupa in Brighton. He preceded her in death on March 27, 2012. Alice was a long-time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton. 

She worked as an administrative assistant for the Brighton Area Schools and then went on to work for the School of Business for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, a position she was very proud to have held. Following her retirement, Alice and her husband opened The Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Suttons Bay, Michigan. In addition, Alice was a very avid gardener, artist, and animal lover.

Shirley Ann Killop

Shirley Ann Killop, age 78, of Brighton passed away January 24, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 19, 1935 the daughter of Albert and Clara (Stiemel) Hahnenberg. In 1955 she married Bradley V. Killop in Detroit, Michigan and he preceded her in death in 1994. Shirley was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Parish, TOPS, and Howell water aerobics. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, gardening and spending time with her family. 

She is survived by her children: Kevin, Bryan (Ella), Lynn Johnson, Lorraine (Scott) Hale, Denise (Don) Rapp, John, and Jerry, 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, one sister Sandy Divisi, one brother William Hahnenberg, one brother-in-law Fr. John Killop and her dog Dolly. She was preceded in death by one son Timothy, three granddaughters, Samantha Hale, Jessica Fear, and Kelsey Johnson, one brother Tom and a sister Cindy.
