Trooper Michael Sura will now be writing the Ask A Trooper column.

I am Trooper Michael Sura, of the Michigan State Police – Brighton Post and I am the Post Community Service Trooper.

As the Post Community Service Trooper it is my responsibility to be a point of contact for the community, civic groups, schools and businesses and to provide information on a variety of topics including school safety, strategies for the prevention of identification theft and fraud, traffic safety and crime prevention. To assist me to answer questions or inform citizens of the multitude of public safety topics I will now be writing the Ask A Trooper column.

Internet safety

Recently, I was able to visit several retirement communities and talk with people about internet safety and protection from identity theft.  I have provided personal safety programs, anti-bullying programs and computer safety for children, and information on current internet scams.  As the Post Community Service Trooper these are just a few things I can provide to our community.  If any of these programs interest you, please contact me at the Brighton Post at 810-227-1051.

Stopping for school buses

The requirement for drivers to stop for school buses is covered in MCL 257.682, “(1) The operator of a vehicle overtaking or meeting a school bus that has stopped and is displaying 2 alternately flashing red lights located at the same level shall bring the vehicle to a full stop not less than 20 feet from the school bus and shall not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or the visual signals are no longer actuated. The operator of a vehicle who fails to stop for a school bus as required by this subsection, who passes a school bus in violation of this subsection, or who fails to stop for a school bus in violation of an ordinance that is substantially similar to this subsection, is responsible for a civil infraction. “

'Move Over Law'

MCL 257.653a is Michigan’s “move over law” for drivers approaching stopped emergency vehicles on roadways.  This law states a driver who approaches an emergency vehicle, which has their emergency lights operating are required to use “due care and caution," when passing the emergency vehicle and yield right-of-way by moving over at least one lane.  If it is not possible to move over a lane, “the driver “shall reduce and maintain a safe speed for weather, road conditions, and vehicular or pedestrian traffic and proceed with due care and caution.”

Construction zones

We have numerous road construction zones in the metro area.  MCL 257.625(9) gives direction regarding the speed limits in construction zones.  If you receive a citation in a construction zone, the fine is doubled.  So let’s give the road construction crews a break, keep your money in your wallet and let’s follow the speed limits in the construction zones.
