Hartland Man Arrested, Charged Following Standoff in Deerfield Township

The following arrest information was supplied by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A 38-year-old Hartland man who was arrested following a standoff that ended early Monday has been arraigned on an assault with a dangerous weapon charge in connection with a domestic dispute, according to authorities.

The five-hour standoff occurred after Robert W. Nyilas refused to surrender from his parents house on Indian Valley Trail near Wiggins Road in Deerfield Township, Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte said. This was after police say he ran from the scene of the dispute in Hartland on Santa Fe Trail that led to a 5:24 p.m. call Sunday to 911, the release said.

The department's Tactical Team and Crisis Resolution Team attempted to negotiate without any response for several hours until an arrest and search warrant were obtained, the release said. The tactical team entered the house and arrested the man without incident at 2 a.m., police said.

Bezotte said the prosecutor is reviewing possible charges of obstruction of justice and harboring a fugitive aginst the parents, a 67-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman. He said Nyilas told them after his arrest that his parents advised him not to turn himself in that night and to wait until the next day before trying to sort out the situation.

Bezotte said the Nyilas is accused of trying to hit and missing his live-in girlfriend, 56, with a baseball bat after the pair argued over who would pay the emergency room bill for a broken arm she suffered three weeks before. He said Nyilas is also suspected of causing the broken arm, although the incident previously went unreported.
