Holly Man Dies in Hartland Motorcycle Crash

60-year-old hit a deer near on Old U.S. 23 near Wallace Lake Drive.

A 60-year-old Holly man died Monday evening after his motorcycle hit a deer on northbound Old U.S. 23 near Wallace Lake Drive in Hartland, according to the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.

James Moelke was prounounced dead at the scene after he was thrown from his 1984 Honda Gold Wing motorcycle at about 7:30 p.m., said a news release. Members of the Hartland Deerfield Fire Authority, Livingston County EMS and the sheriff's department had attempted to revive him.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Moelke was wearing a DOT approved helmet. The crash remains under investigation.

Hartland had 87 deer-related crashes in 2010 and ranked ninth in southeast Michigan, according to the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition (MDCC).

There were a total of 55,867 deer crashes in Michigan last year, 1,277 resulted in injuries. There were 11 deaths, eight of those were motorcyclists.
