Man Arrested for Stealing TV Using Bogus Receipt from Hartland Walmart

The following information was supplied by the Livingston County Sheriff's Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A man was arrested for retail fraud and organized retail crime after admitting to stealing electronics from the Hartland Walmart, according to a report from the Livingston County Sheriff's Department.

Police say the suspect was seen on Jan. 21 cashing a paycheck and then buying a television set, valued at $178. After putting the paid-for television in his car, police say the man then returned to the store, selected the same television set and walked out of the store showing the receipt for the first TV.

According to the report, a Walmart employee recognized the suspect from three previous occasions, knew he had been arrested at the Walmart in Genessee County in January 2013 and contacted police with his information.

After questioning the suspect at his Owosso Township home, police said, the man admitted to stealing the additional electronics using the receipts to look as though he had paid for them.

The suspect then told police he would return one television set to the store and would then sell the additional TV on Craigslist.
